Opera Unbound – FOX
Nebula is delighted to spotlight an exciting upcoming production from our friends at Opera Unbound.
Their newest project, The Fox, is an innovative chamber opera by Vancouver composer Roan Shankaruk, inspired by the novella by D.H. Lawrence. The story explores the nuanced relationships and shifting power dynamics between three characters: two women running an isolated poultry farm in the aftermath of World War I and the Spanish Flu, and the young soldier who arrives and changes their lives.
This production marks the staged premiere of the opera, blending dramatic storytelling with musical influences ranging from Benjamin Britten and grand opera to jazz. Directed by Christopher Lam, with music direction by Perri Lo and art direction by Jessica Wynn Cole, the production promises a compelling and intimate operatic experience.
Nebula audiences may also recognize Taryn Plater, founder of Opera Unbound, who performed the title role in our production of La Tragédie de Carmen last September. We are thrilled to see her continuing to bring bold new opera projects to the Vancouver stage.
📅 Performances: April 17 & 18 - 7:30PM, April 19 - 2:30PM
📍 The Annex 823 Seymour Street, Vancouver

Vinyl Night at Nebula 🎵
Nebula continues its series of intimate listening gatherings with the second Vinyl Night at Nebula, as our friend James Yang returns to share another remarkable selection from his personal collection: Echoes of a Golden Age: Opera Recordings of the 1930s and 40s.
At Nebula, we celebrate both the next generation of local artistry and the legendary performers whose recordings continue to inspire musicians and audiences today. This evening offers a relaxed opportunity to listen deeply, discover historic recordings, and enjoy thoughtful conversation in a welcoming community setting.
The listening session will feature iconic voices from opera’s golden era, presented through James Yang’s personal high-fidelity vinyl system, including a Pioneer turntable, Adcom preamp, McCormack power amplifier, and B&W speakers.
A guest from a previous Vinyl Night shared:
“Vinyl Night at Nebula was a wonderful experience. Hearing Corelli, Callas, King, and others in warm, high-fidelity sound was truly a treat--not to mention the friendly atmosphere one has come to expect from any Nebula event. When’s the next one?”
Date: March 10, 7:30 PM
Location: Nebula Performance Hall 9205 Shaughnessy Street
Admission is free, and all are welcome.

As we look ahead to the coming weeks, Nebula continues to celebrate the many ways music brings people together - from the David Walsh’s immersive week of opera workshops, lectures, and performances, as well as collaborations with friends in our artistic community and intimate gatherings like Vinyl Night at Nebula, to the upcoming Art Song Mastercourse with Ian Bostridge and Wenwen Du.
