Kevin Liu's Director Notes for Nebula Chamber Choir:
Hello everyone, my name is Kevin Liu, and it is my privilege to be appointed as the director of the newly forming Nebula Chamber Choir. In September, I will be
starting my doctorate at UBC with a focus on music education and the de-mystification of vocal art forms.
Although I have choral conducting experience in the past as a student teacher in high school choir, I am excited to start an ensemble of my own. As a singer, pianist, and
educator, I strongly believe that it is important for young musicians to be well-rounded and open-minded to the unfamiliar. I especially want to thank our founder, Alice
Chee, for supporting me in this project, and for entrusting
me with this leadership position. Without Alice, I would not have the privilege of fine tuning my conducting with industry giants, such as Jacques Lacombe, music director of Vancouver Opera, and Czech conductor, Norbert Baxa.
I also want to thank Artistic Director, Wenwen Du, for the endless hours of coachings, for allowing me to observe her lessons, and for being a beacon of diligent and professional leadership. Choir has always been an important aspect of my life. In eighth grade, I was peer pressured into joining our high school’s junior choir. At the time, I thought that it was taboo for a boy to sing, especially since I was already a “solo pianist.” This mindset quickly changed. By the time I was graduating high school, I was singing all four choirs that the school had to offer, attending morning and after school
rehearsals Monday through Thursday. I spent the first half of my undergrad at KPU. beginning as a piano major, but quickly switching to choral studies under Gail Suderman. I sang in both choral ensembles, and served as Choir Manager for one year. After transferring to UBC, I sang in both Choral Union and University Singers. During this time, I also returned to my high school as a student teacher, and was given
the opportunity to conduct and to run rehearsals for all four choirs in the high school, as well as the choir
of the middle school next door.
Nebula Performances has been the perfect place for me to develop as a well-rounded musician. I greatly admire Alice’s foresight to encourage young and upcoming musicians to work with industry
professionals, because it aligns with my own mission to de-mystify and normalize singing in our youth.
Nebula Chamber Singers will be a big project, but I am excited to embark on this journey and to learn
alongside my singers.
