This gripping adaptation by Peter Brook condenses Bizet’s original Carmen into a tightly-focused and intense production, highlighting the work’s most powerful and dramatic elements. Set in a contemporary urban high school, this production speaks directly to a new generation while remaining accessible to audiences of all backgrounds.

David Walsh
Director's Notes
"I am a passionate believer in the power of opera to transform our hearts and minds. Opera is a visceral experience affecting all of our senses. Whether you are a diehard fan of opera or new to the art form - maybe even skeptical of it! - we are eager to welcome you to share the experience with us this summer!
We begin our journey with Carmen’s Tragedy presented by Nebula Performances in the chamber version of Bizet’s original grand opera which was first created by Peter Brook and his collaborators in 1982. Our further-updated production is given a contemporary context explicitly to appeal to a younger demographic. However, the goal of our production is not simplistic self-actualisation but rather an attempt to place Carmen in the context of real social issues we face today, with the hope of better understanding and responding to them. We are excited to share our production of this classic opera story with you and hope you will join us for Nebula Performances’ inaugural opera production in August and September!"

Testimonials

"I took a chance last night and attended the performance of Carmen. I had not heard of your organization before, but I and my wife enjoy finding new musical or theater experiences in Vancouver.
I sat in the audience last night with a grin from ear to ear, and my ears were grinning too. What an inspired interpretation of Bizet. The joy of the performers was radiant and it was all I could do to restrain myself to just one
'BRAVO'."

[Wenwen] your skill and emotional connection with the piano are incredible.
The singers expertly portrayed emotions through actions and voice. Such a clever rendition of "Carmen"! Costumes, lighting, stage direction, and piano ----- WOW a great evening!!!!

I think what you and David created is wonderful. I was enthralled from Taryn’s first note. The singing was enthusiastic and nuanced. I can only imagine all the work that went into it. Everyone should be commended. And the piano playing! A full 90mins without a break! My goodness!

The tone was hushed as the show commenced, and in mere seconds I was left speechless at the level of passion and professionalism taking place on the stage. The excitement brimming from the entire cast was so contagious, I found myself spellbound. Directed by the masterful David Walsh, this opera took on a modern twist that made me feel the pulse of the story, while stepping boldly forward into today's world of cellphones and social media. A seamless blend of today and yesterday. I was breathless after listening to the sensational voices of the cast, led by the ultra talents of Taryn Plater (Carmen) and Wanshuai Yu (Don Jose) who delivered performances so visceral and real, I had trouble believing the production had finished up until the final bow.
