Led by internationally acclaimed tenor Ian Bostridge, CBE, and pianist Wenwen Du, the mastercourse welcomed artists from across the community into a space of deep musical inquiry, imagination, and growth. Across three inspiring days, participants explored the relationship between poetry and music through the art song repertoire, refining their artistry under the guidance of two internationally respected performers and educators.

The mastercourse concluded as a tremendous success, filled with remarkable performances, artistic discovery, and an inspiring sense of community among participants and audiences alike.

Broadway World Review

Following their Ottawa recital at the Carleton Dominion-Chalmers Centre on May 6, Ian Bostridge and Wenwen Du received enthusiastic praise from BroadwayWorld reviewer Courtney Castelino, who described the performance as “the type of music where you can sit back, close your eyes, and let the music entirely engulf your senses.”

The review highlighted the remarkable artistic connection between Bostridge and Du, noting that the duo “communicate on stage silently using nonverbal cues so that they are perfectly attuned.” Castelino also praised Wenwen Du’s expressive pianism and Bostridge’s extraordinary vocal range and interpretive depth throughout the program of Hugo Wolf and Benjamin Britten. “Nebula Performances Society, based in Vancouver, provides a platform for artists, particularly the next generation of artists, to connect with the local community through performances, workshops, and masterclasses” -Courtney Castelino, Broadway World

Particular attention was given to the emotional intensity of Britten’s Holy Sonnets of John Donne, as well as the thoughtful program presentation provided to audiences, which deepened engagement with the poetry and music alike. The performance was described as both intellectually rich and emotionally immersive — a powerful reflection of the artistic vision shared by Bostridge, Du, and Nebula Performances Society.

“Wenwen and Ian made magic tonight in Ottawa. They are in a league of their own and I thank them from the bottom of my heart for delving into the cracks and crevices to bring the songs to life.

I look forward to hearing them perform again soon! Brava!” -Courtney Castelino, Broadway World
