Ian Bostridge & Wenwen Du in Recital

Ottawa & Vancouver | May 2026

In May 2026, Nebula Performances Society welcomed internationally acclaimed tenor Ian Bostridge, CBE, and pianist Wenwen Du for two recitals in Ottawa and Vancouver. Presented at the Carleton Dominion-Chalmers Centre on May 6 and the Vancouver Playhouse on May 14, the performances marked the duo’s return to Vancouver after ten years and Nebula’s first presentation outside British Columbia.

The programme featured six Goethe settings by Hugo Wolf alongside Benjamin Britten’s monumental The Holy Sonnets of John Donne, bringing together two composers whose works explore humanity, faith, suffering, and transcendence. Across both cities, audiences experienced performances distinguished by extraordinary musical insight, textual depth, and the rare artistic connection that has defined Bostridge and Du’s collaboration for more than a decade.

The recitals were met with enthusiastic audience and critical response. In its review of the Ottawa performance, BroadwayWorld praised the “beautiful performance of Wolf and Britten” and noted that Bostridge and Du had developed a rapport that was “palpable,” performing with a level of communication that left them “perfectly attuned.” The review further highlighted Du’s passion and artistry at the piano, describing her musicianship as inseparable from the music itself.

In advance of the concerts, media coverage across Canada celebrated the significance of the collaboration. STIR described Ian Bostridge as an art-song “rock star,” highlighting his international career, intellectual depth, and longstanding artistic partnership with Wenwen Du. Reflecting on their work together, Du remarked that the pair share “a very strong connection, musically,” adding that Bostridge is “the most amazing artist in that he listens so well.”

The tour also brought attention to Nebula’s broader artistic mission. Interviews and features emphasized the organization’s commitment to creating opportunities for emerging artists through performances, mentorship, masterclasses, and community engagement.

Beyond the recital stage, Bostridge and Du led Nebula’s inaugural Art Song Mastercourse, working intensively with singers and pianists over three days of coaching, discussion, and artistic exploration. The residency concluded with The Art of Song, a public performance featuring the mastercourse participants and celebrating the next generation of collaborative artists. Together, the recitals, mastercourse, and final concert formed a unique artistic residency that connected internationally renowned musicians with emerging artists and audiences across Canada.

As Ian Bostridge remarked during his time at Nebula:

“For all of us who love song and chamber music, Nebula sends a signal from Vancouver to the wider musical world: this art form matters.”
