Dear friends of Nebula,
It has been an incredibly vibrant and inspiring time at Nebula Performances, and we are excited to share some recent highlights and upcoming events with you.

✨ Simply Lyrical - March 29 at 2:30 PM
Whether classical, folk, popular, or jazz, the heart of music lies in its lyric - the words, the melody, often both. Simply Lyrical brings together musicians from diverse backgrounds for an afternoon of heartfelt musical connection on the Nebula stage.
From Shakespeare’s contemporaries to Britten, Dylan, Sosa, Steeleye Span, and Villa-Lobos, this program celebrates the power of lyrical music across time and genre.
Featuring: Jeremy Berkman (trombone), Wenwen Du (piano), Hannah Ernst (soprano), Adriana Zaharijevic (soprano), Janelle Nadeau (harp), Michael Rush (bass), Raphael Geronimo (percussion), and Josué Tacoronte (guitar).
Co-produced by Nebula Artist-in-Residence Jeremy Berkman, this intimate gathering highlights repertoire that speaks deeply to each performer.

🌟 David Walsh Workshop Week Recap
We are beyond grateful for an inspiring week with stage director David Walsh, working intensively with Nebula’s emerging artists. From the inspiring workshop with David Walsh, to Vinyl Night with our friend James Yang, the Opera Rocks lecture, and the Raising the Roof selected participants concert—it has truly been a fulfilling and vibrant week.
We are so grateful to our dear President Alice Chee and Director Lynol Amero for creating such a special platform in Vancouver, and to David Walsh for his belief, dedication, and inspiring guidance for these wonderful young artists. So proud of everyone who poured their hearts into the music. Nebula Performances is truly “a place that births new stars.” (Opera Canada)
A huge thank you to David Walsh for your passionate commitment to guiding and nurturing emerging young artists in the community. We are so looking forward to having you back at Nebula in the very near future—whether for a full opera production or for more workshops and lectures.”
“A huge thank you to Nebula Performances for the opportunity to sing this past weekend, to David, Alice, Lynol and Wenwen, for your support, inspiration and encouragement and for being the amazing people that you are, and to the other singers for contributing your art to this wonderful space! It is a joy to sing with you all.”

🎶 Ian Bostridge & Wenwen Du in Recital - Tickets Now Available!
Nebula Performances Society reunites three-time Grammy Award-winning tenor Ian Bostridge, CBE, and pianist Wenwen Du for two evenings of art song this May. Their across Canada tour will begin on May 6 at the Carleton Dominion-Chalmers Centre in Ottawa. Then followed by a performance on May 14 at the Vancouver Playhouse, marking ten years since the duo's last appearance in Vancouver. The recitals will feature exquisite music by Benjamin Britten and Hugo Wolf.
One of the most influential recitalists of our time, Ian Bostridge is celebrated worldwide for his profound musicianship, intellectual depth, and definitive interpretations of Lieder and art song. “Bostridge makes you think anew about the music in hand, interpreting all these songs as much through the mind of the poetry as that of the composer” (Gramophone).
Wenwen Du is known as much for her “superb” pianism (The New York Times) as for her
dedicated mentorship and artistic leadership at Vancouver’s Nebula Performances. New York
Classical Review wrote, “Accompanists are expected to be sensitive… Du was indeed
sensitive but also forceful—her playing was more duet than recital.”
Together, Bostridge and Du have been praised as “not just on the same page, they anticipate each other’s every nuance in perfect synchronization” (The Vancouver Sun). “… In the hands of an ideal team like Bostridge and Du, a performance of the cycle is, in spite of itself, a testament to the capacity of music to articulate — if not transcend — human
suffering.”
"If you are able, to hear, see, savour this extraordinary work of art, through the gifts of Ian
Bostridge, and Wenwen Du… by all means do, and maybe more than once” (Operawire)
Our artists are particularly excited to welcome Ian Bostridge to Nebula this spring, with many looking forward not only to his performances, but also to the opportunity to work with him directly. As part of his visit, Nebula will host an Art Song Mastercourse, and applications are still open for those interested in participating. Click here to apply: https://form.jotform.com/260536612661051

This engagement of Ian Bostridge is made possible by the generous support of Executive Producer Alice Chee.

🎟️ Movie Night - Recap
On March 22, we presented a special screening of Winterreise - Franz Schubert’s profound song cycle - in a striking film version directed by David Alden, featuring tenor Ian Bostridge and pianist Julius Drake.
This screening offered a valuable opportunity to experience one of the defining works of the Lieder repertoire through the lens of one of its most compelling interpreters. Ian Bostridge’s performance brought remarkable psychological depth and nuance to this iconic cycle.
We were delighted to share this experience with our community and thank all who attended for contributing to such an engaging and memorable evening.

Artistic Director Wenwen shares her experience of collaborating with Ian Bostridge with the young artists at Nebula.
We are grateful for your continued support and engagement with Nebula Performances. We look forward to welcoming you to our upcoming events and sharing more music together in the weeks ahead.
