Read what stage director, David Walsh has to say about returning to Vancouver:
"Returning to Vancouver after an absence of several years, I have been genuinely blown
away at the array of superb vocal talent here, eager for opportunities to perform. I have
been particularly impressed with the work of a terrific new musical ‘start-up’, Nebula
Performances, under its Artistic Director, WenWen Du. She has created a vibrant and
forward-looking performance space for art song, chamber music, and opera that offers
young local singers a home where their talents can be nurtured and they can acquire
invaluable performance experience in a supportive environment.
Having observed masterclasses by such opera luminaries as Judith Forst and David
Meek, followed by my own workshop at Nebula with these fine singers last winter, I was
convinced that the fledgling company was ready to take on a complete opera project.
So when I was approached by WenWen Du to direct Peter Brook’s scaled-down version
of Bizet’s Carmen, retitled as La Tragedie de Carmen and lasting only 85 minutes, I
jumped at the chance. After two weeks of intensive rehearsal, I can state unequivocally
that the level of musicianship and dramatic expression the youthful cast is bringing to
the project is truly awesome and I am certain that Vancouver audiences will be thrilled
and amazed as well! Nebula is rapidly becoming the ’go to’ venue for a wide range of stimulating and innovative musical events in the Metro Vancouver area! Don’t miss the chance to experience ‘Carmen’ in an intimate space and with a powerful performance by young opera stars in the making!"
