Jeremy Berkman
Artist in Residence
A graduate of Oberlin College and Conservatory of Music with degrees in both music and economics, as well as the Juilliard School of Music with a Masters Degree, trombonist Jeremy Berkman has lived in Vancouver since 1989, becoming a Canadian citizen in 1991. Having worked as a Stage Manager at the Aspen Music Festival for five summers (1983-1988), his first position in Vancouver was as Stage Manager for the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra. He left that position in 1992 to focus on performing and parenting, and was fortunate to be engaged as Principal Trombonist with the Vancouver Opera Orchestra, as well as work as a free-lance trombonist in Vancouver performing in classical, jazz, and commercial settings. As a member of cellist Peggy Lee's Octet, the Peggy Lee Band, Jeremy has recorded six CDs and as a band member been nominated for a Juno Award. Jeremy co-founded Vancouver's Turning Point Ensemble in 2000, and through his efforts to build and bridge communities (as is the wonderful focus of Nebula society), he has become an important member of Vancouver's musical community as a producer, curator, and advocate. Jeremy's interests in working with singers have extended beyond Vancouver Opera to recording with singer songwriters, performing with vocalists fronting big bands and most recently collaborating with harpist Janelle Nadeau to create a program entitled "Simply Lyrical" to celebrate melodies sung and played! His newest interest is in the music of the Renaissance, performing on the sackbut (early trombone) with many outstanding vocalists and also with counter tenor Daniel Cabena and the Bozzini String Quartet in a newly composed work by Owen Underhill that will be released in the summer 2025.
